Job title

Has anyone ever come across a job title that is between Learning and Development Manager and Head of Learning and Development? I have been asked to look into this, but am currently drawing a blank, there doesn't appear to be a level between the two. Looking for any suggestions!

Great question Alice, I'm not sure either. Do you know/are you able to share the reason for it?

Have you had a look through LinkedIn or job adverts maybe?

I have and I didn't get anywhere. I'm starting to think that the reason I can't find anything, is because it doesn't exist!

Maybe it doesn't exist now, but doesn't mean you can't make it exist as job titles, I think, are relevant to the organisation.

What was the reason there needs to be something in between?

This question tickled my fancy a bit... just taking a moment to ponder.  I do a great deal of work assessing shortlisted candidates for mainly senior leadership posts. Helping client organisations to get clear on the job they're recruiting for is often an important part of this work. Personally, this is also where I would start in responding to your question. I can imagine that the person who has asked you to look into this may have a job in mind. If so, what might the purpose of the job be? What are the key areas in which the job needs to deliver results? The answer to your job title question may come from getting answers to these questions, because it gives more specific information about what the job IS rather than what you have at the moment, i.e. what the job IS NOT. Of course, managers also occasionally want to create a new title in order to promote someone. In my view, this isn't a good idea, unless the new title comes with real responsibilities - which takes you back to job purpose and responsibilities. The lovely TJ system isn't enabling me to add paragraphs today, so I'll stop here - one big lump of text!

Alice, I am with Dorothy on this one and would probe about the reasons behind the question.  As someone who was promoted internally and did have a job title change to recognize my contribution, I felt it lacked punch.  It did help with my stakeholders though so although I felt it was a little hollow, I'd been acting and working at that level for a long time, then it did the job.

You probably also need to look at the internal context rather than the external.  With some of my clients they can have a L&D manager who is really a Head of (but don't go large on titles) and others who have an advisor, L&D Manager, Senior, Head of structure.  In the days of flat organizations you tend to see less of that.  The key is the change in responsibilities or salary/ progression options.

I'd also ask the post holder.  If it's you, then think what would motivate you and show your role for what it is?  If it's not, then check in with them.  You might discover it's not really a title.  Just a thought.

Perhaps - Nearly the Head of of Learning and Development, or Have Outgrown Learning & Development Manager.

Liking it Paul.  Maybe titles like that could catch on rather than Head of Excitement, Happiness Guru, Ninja or any other of the weird and wonderful that seem to be out there are that moment. Sharon
